IEP Level 4 is designed for the Intermediate student in English-language training— someone who satisfies basic survival needs and very routine social demands; understands simple learned phrases easily and new simple phrases containing familiar vocabulary, spoken slowly with frequent repetition; participates in face-to-face and telephone conversations dealing with familiar topics; gives oral directions to do a familiar task of several steps; reads and interprets simple material on familiar topics, simple directions, schedules, signs, maps, and menus; fills out forms requiring basic personal information; and writes short, simple notes and messages based on familiar situations.


Upon successful completion of the Intermediate level, the student will
• have a good command of the most common English grammatical structures,
• be able to use a wide range of conversational strategies,
• understand basic English writing strategies,
• have a wide functional English vocabulary,
• enjoy speaking and writing the English language, and
• listen, read, speak, and write English well enough to progress to Level 5 as exhibited
through the unit, midterm and final assessment scores.
